News from Down Under

Australia’s creating some buzz in the dental world, topping the headlines this week. Here’s a summary!

Poll Uncovers Dental ‘Crisis’

A recent poll surveying 1200 Australians produced startling results. It seems more than 90 percent believe the dental system is failing, and recent headlines don’t help much.

A 3 year-old boy in desperate need of new crowns and root work for his rotted teeth is a case in point. His parents have been told he’ll have to wait upwards of a year to receive dental treatment. Aussies are dumbfounded by the system’s inefficiency, while the rest of us can’t help but wonder how a 3-year old kid ended up in such a condition in the first place.

Not enough evidence to charge dentist

A Sydney coroner investigating the death of a man who from brain damage allegedly suffered on his dentist’s operating table says there isn’t enough evidence to warrant manslaughter charges.

Dr. George Pegios had given Sabatino Catignani, 67, three drugs to sedate him during a tooth implant surgery in 2002. Reports show the man’s oxygen dropped to dangerous levels and he stopped breathing. The doctor and his staff started CPR. The man died two days later. Meanwhile, the Australian Dental Association is responding with the assurance that the dentistry in Australia is world class.

HIV-positive dentist’s patients being tested

Last month a Queensland dentist learned she was HIV-positive, prompting a full-blown scare. Health officials have contacted over 800 patients who had undergone treatment to ensure that they are tested for the virus.

Remember Kimberly Bergalis and Dr. David Acer? Watching a person die on television of AIDS sparked a major movement to regulate sterilization procedures in dentistry in 1990.

I can remember a time when patients wouldn’t see a male hygienist, and many hygienists left the field out of fear of contracting AIDS. For most of the 1990s, the line “Highest infection control standards “ was mandatory on all Yellow Page ads.

Come in and Make Yourself at Home!
Introducing TheWealthyDentist’s new forum!

A few short months ago, we sent about 50 thousands dental professionals the very first edition of this newsletter. We had no idea where it would lead, only that we wanted an easy way to connect with, inform and (hopefully) entertain you. Now we’ve decided it’s high time each of you were able to do the same for one another.

Last week we launched The Wealth Dentist’s forum – a virtual haven for dentists – in which you can share your opinions, knowledge and cheesy one-liners. (I know… look who’s talking, right?) We’ll even initiate a few discussions through this newsletter.

We hope this online community will encourage you to swap stories from the trenches, discuss the topics of the day and ask some very important questions. We also hope we’ve created an online home in which you can feel comfortable – your beliefs and ideas respected. In order to maintain this type of environment, we’ve established a few rules that we’d like to share with you.

The Rules of the Game

We encourage the free expression of ideas, but do not want to condone a forum whose users are abused or taken advantage of. As a result, please keep the following rules in mind when chatting:

  1. No anonymous posts are allowed on this system. This is a matter of integrity. As a dentist, we expect you to stand by your comments.
  2. You certify that you are 13 years of age or over. All those individuals under 13 years of age will need a full release form from their parents before posting any messages. This is in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 2000 (COPPA).
  3. We do not allow nicknames or posts that are inflammatory or vulgar.
  4. All groups are moderated for foul language and commercialized promotional posts.
  5. Links to adult content, pages with links to adult content, near adult content (including model and swimsuit sites), or messages describing anything against the law will be removed.
  6. No press releases, newsletters, Web pages, or copyrighted content may be inserted into The Wealthy Dentist posts. Minor fair use excerpts of less than one paragraph (4 sentences) may be used if the content is publicly available on the Internet.
  7. Forum moderators will periodically post their comments, but these may not necessarily reflect the opinions of The Wealthy Dentist or its employees.
  8. Since this is interactive, and everyone who participates in is “in it together,” please treat others the way you wish to be treated.
  9. You may not copy and retransmit any information out of these forums without first getting the permission of the original author of the message and an administrator of
  10. Messages posted at this site are the sole opinion and responsibility of the poster.

These are just a few of the rules by which forum members must abide. You can view a complete version of our terms of use here!

In return for your consideration, we’ll do our part to protect your privacy and respect your posts. While maintains its right to edit all content on its pages, we will not alter or misrepresent your words unless you are in violation of these terms of use (inflammatory language, sexual content, promotional hijacking, etc.).

Join the Discussion!

Now that we’ve dealt with some of the particulars of forum use, we’d like to invite you to join the discussion. To do so, simply visit the forum, register and join in the threads that interest you. Remember that this is a new board. With your participation, we can transform this virtually blank slate into a true online community for dental professionals!

Heroes and Zeros

A Tale to Make Heads Roll

Austrian burglars got the fright of their lives when they chose to raid a Vienna dentist’s home. The men found a number of mummified heads in a chest in the basement – the doctor had used them for personal research. Needless to say the criminals made a speedy exit. Meanwhile, officials are investigating whether or not the dentist had breached any regulations for the storage of research materials. So, what do you think? Is this doctor is a zero, or just obsessed with the trade?
