Dental Patient Quotas: Legislation Inspired by Invisalign

Post your comments on the dentist quotas to our blog.

Invisalign dental patient quotas anger dentistsIn response to outcry from dentists and dental associations, Invisalign recently dropped the requirement that dentists must begin at least 10 cases per year in order to offer the clear braces to their patients.

But New York state isn’t taking any chances. Inspired by the Invisalign fiasco, NY lawmakers recently introduced a bill to prevent manufacturers from setting patient quotas on dentists who wish to use the manufacturer’s product. (Read more)

This survey asked dentists if they feel their states should pass bills similar to the one in New York.

  • 60% said yes: Manufacturers should not be permitted to set quotas.
  • 40% said no: Legislation is not the answer.

Invisalign should be free to dig their own grave

  • "Invisalign can do whatever they want. It's a free market. Besides, I do orthodontics and don't even offer Invisalign to my patients because there are better alternatives for both patients and dentists such as braces and Inman aligners." (Alaska dentist)
  • "We have too many laws already. Invisalign has already been punished by losing sizeable market share. This is the way capitalism and free markets are supposed to work." (Georgia dentist)
  • "Why should the legislature get involved in something as small as the way a dental company deals with its customers? Just don't use them." (Florida dentist)

Quotas are wrong

  • "Quotas are inherently morally wrong. It implies treatment planning to meet contract obligations and not patient needs." (Florida dentist)
  • "Cases should be based on patient need and their demand, not some quota to guarantee lab production and profit." (Arizona dentist)

More laws?!? Over clear braces?!?

  • "Too much legislation already. After the reaction to Invisalign, others will hesitate to try to set quotas." (Texas dentist)
  • "Good grief. When is 'regulation' the answer? As dentists, we are where we are due to the fact that we are the smartest and brightest. Act like it! You've got a brain, use it." (Texas pediatric dentist)
  • "Keep the parasites out of Dentistry. This is absurd. A few puny compensating idiots for something (lack of education, success, greed, envy) in the legislature trying to rule over everyone and everything. These were the guys you wanted to kick the crap out of in high school." (Colorado dental office worker)
