UK Smoking Ban Leads to Increased Interest in Cosmetic Dentistry
This summer, England introduced a ban on smoking in restaurants, bars, and other businesses. It would seem this smoking ban has been good for dentists. The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reports a 12% increase in in cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening and veneers. Said president Christopher Orr: “It appears people are smoking less now due to the ban, so it is not a
surprise that many would like an improved smile to go with their better health.”

Oral Cancer Linked to HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
Cervical cancer has made headlines recently with the introduction of a vaccine against the most vicious strains of the virus. A new study finds that these same strains are also linked to oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Though it is being marketed to young women as a way to fight cervical cancer, the vaccine may also decrease the risk of oral cancer.
